Weiner Roast: More Favorites from 2010 Part 1

Daytripper (Vertigo Comics)

As awesome and incredibly long as our crossover with TALES FROM THE PARENTS BASEMENT was, we know we missed a lot of awesome comics that came out in 2010(or we read a bit late from previous years), so here are some more of our favorites! We were scolded by a couple people for not mentioning the awesome Daytripper series from Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, which follows the life and death of Bras each and every issue.

No, you read that right, each issue is a different point in Bras life, with each issue ending with his own death. Tremendously powerful storytelling and emotional resonance to the reader makes what could be a very sad story be very enjoyable. Please do not get me wrong, there are points in which you will be incredibly sad, but that is not what this book is about. It is the celebration of life and all the things in it that can make it worth living such as family and passion, right down to the simplest of pleasures. I highly recommend checking it out for yourself.

The Coffin – IDW

This book is actually a collection of comics that came out from ONI in 2000, but they are collected here in an oversized hardcover that is just gorgeous. If you have never read The Coffin from Phil Hester and Mike Huddleston, picking this up is going to be a real treat. This was easily one of the books full of the most gorgeous artwork I picked up in all of 2010 (possibly only second to Blacksad).

If you have any interest in poignant, soul searching stories, or hell, you just love robots, this is a great book to pick up.

The Boys – Dynamite Entertainment

A series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson that if you haven’t check out, but spent long enough in a comic shop, will have heard about how over the top this book can be at times. That is true, but at the same time, you are going to get some of the most grounded and level headed takes on super heroes I have ever read in a book. The real question is if you are looking for a book with both of these qualities?

Following a group called “The Boys” led by The Butcher, most of the story revolves around this motley band who are trying to keep the superheroes in line, as in this world, they are far worse than any rockstar with their lack of responsibility and extreme pleasures. Drugs, hookers, orgies, and reckless disregard for the safety of others are typical things for the bad boys in spandex, and The Boys want them to answer for all they have done.

Just a great series that I can’t recommend to everyone, but if you liked Preacher or the Punisher story “Welcome Back, Frank” then I think there is a very safe bet in you enjoying this comic more than a little.

Burnt Weiners Episode 042 1 Month 2 Live #2

Weed is gone . . . and all the Weiners make frowny faces. On the bright side, they are just an audio podcast, so you don’t have to see their sad (and ugly) mugs, just hear their grating voices! They chose to use those voices to talk about the September Marvel series of 1 Month 2 Live! What did they think? I forgot, you better check it out and find out for yourself.

The Weiners are joined by the lead singer of Beneath the Surface as Steege talks about the book Zero History and playing some Diablo 2. Bo can’t find the words to describe Wolverine #1 (Marvel), where Logan finds himself in hell, but then won’t shut up about The Tick(New England)! John is excited about Lucid (Archaia), Weird War Tales (DC), the wrap up of Daytripper (Vertigo) and Last Days of American Crime (Radical)!
