Web Comics – The GuttersYou will find more fine examples of this satirical type strip at www.the-gutters.com Web Comics: Supermassive Black Hole A*Supermassive Black Hole A*, or simply A* (pronounced “A star”), tells stories of a human civilization at the center of the Milky Way galaxy: an area of space dominated by a gigantic black hole, where energy is abundant and life is cheap. How humans got there, and how they survive, remains to be seen. Now that we got that out of the way, lets move into the gravy of what you are going to read. SuperMassive Black Hole A* reads much like stills taken from a movie . . . well, that is basically what it is. Conceived as flash shorts, the web comic sprang into existence when the creator Ben Chamberlain wanted to show progress daily, with each page being basically a slide from the slide show . Well, wouldn’t this be boring? HELL NO! In fact, I like it the frantic pace in which you click through the slides, getting a heavy dose of black, with very minimal white shown, sometimes shades of grey here and there. Insanely interesting for people with a fascination with the perils and wonders of space and a college degree in mathematics, or also interesting for people who barely scraped through high school geometry and don’t know the difference between a quasar and a solar flare. The story will pull at your heart strings, and maybe even tax your brain a bit. I know it personally sent me out to do a bit of research to further understand some of the things presented in the comic (and that is a good story when it makes you do homework because you WANT to). Another bonus is a huge backlog of pages to navigate through (the comic updates 5 times a week), which is always a plus for web comics you really enjoy but may discover late. And depending on your reading speed, this could last you from a few hours to half a day. I do suggest taking some breaks, not so much because it becomes boring, but to save some days in the future (don’t gulp down your treat, space it out for enjoyment). Great, now I sound like my mother. I think everyone at Burnt Weiners recommends checking this one out. So turn out the lights, put on your favorite score to a film or show (I recommend the music from X-Files), and get ready to be engrossed. Check out the comic here
And here . . . check out one of the animated shorts Web Comics – God Hates Astronauts
GOD HATES ASTRONAUTS is pages and pages of gorgeous art, super powered beings that I cringe at calling heroes, witty one liners, hilarious running gags and did I forget to mention the artwork is 100% badass? You can check the site out here at GOD HATES ASTRONAUTS and is from creator Ryan Browne, who is also putting out a second web comic that is equally as fun called BLAST FURNACE I can promise you will get 3 things reading this comic: a floating cow head spirit who is pissed off, one of the greatest boxing villains of all time (watch out Balrog!), and a team of heroes you just don’t mind watching fail . . . and fail HARD! We recently talked about God Hates Astronauts on Episode 85 of our Podcast. Click HERE to check it out. Spoiler: We all loved it more than all our loved ones combined. I wish I had Levar Burton to make some cool segue way out of this writeup . . . Web Comics: RATFIST by Doug TenNapelWe recently talked about Ratfist on Episode 85 of our Podcast. Click HERE to check it out In the past two years, it has been my pleasure to read several Doug TenNapel books including Ghostopolis, Iron West, Creature Tech and the recently released Bad Island, any of which I can highly recommend. TenNapel is one of those highly creative world builders, you know the kind, not just the ones content on having a few interesting characters in and a loose plot, but a crazy, zany fleshed out world populated by all sorts of awesome characters even if they show up for a few panels. TenNapel’s stories have twists and turns, lots of action, and heart touching moments. It is with complete honesty I say he is one of my favorite creators, and have yet to be let down by anything I have checked out from him. You get yeti’s piledriving evil robots, giant space eels crashing into the earth, and other crazy mayhem in each and every book! And this past year, he put out his first web comic, Ratfist, and let me tell you, it is just as good as any of the previous works I mentioned . . . and being a webcomic, it is completely free to check out. You can find it at www.ratfist.com It is complete and just waiting for you to get your grubby mouse pointer on (or your grubby fingers if you are on a touchscreen).
From Doug TenNaple on Ratfist.com: It’s been a while since I goofed around with the dorky hero genre of Earthworm Jim, and I wanted to return to that world and those fans to give them a modern take on absurdist humour. After finishing three digital graphic novels, I needed to go back to the old ink and brush. I didn’t know exactly how Ratfist would turn out, but I knew it was going to be wild. I wanted ink to be splattered everywhere! This is all drawn using Japanese Sumi ink with a coarse bamboo and horsehair brush with a little detail work filled in by my trusty Windsor Newton Series 7. Most of all, I’m excited about the daily publishing format. I’ve never put up a page then found out what everyone thought of just that increment of the story. The comments section are a huge part of Ratfist, this is where YOU become part of the entertainment. Don’t be a troll, but do chime in. There’s going to be a lot to talk about so let’s have some fun!
Burnt Weiners Episode 085 – Web Comics Round 2![]() The smartest of the Weiners teaches the rest how to use the internet and we scream and run like mad through the world of web comics! Re-joining the Weiners for this episode is Steege, trying to overthrow the show with his kitty propoganda and sticky upper lip! Behold THE VARIANTS, the Web comedy series that takes you behind the counter of your favorite comic book store.
THE VARIANTS is the brain child of Richard Neal, Joe Cucinotti and Ken Lowery. In early 2009, Richard, owner of the award-winning Zeus Comics, thought all the crazy stuff he saw in his store would make excellent fodder for a comedy series. Seeing the success of Web comedies like “The Guild,” Richard approached Joe and Ken – longtime friends, writers and regulars at the store – to help him develop the series.
The trio discussed and discarded several ideas, including making a faux-documentary-style comedy like “The Office” before settling on an absurd sitcom in the vein of “30 Rock” or “Arrested Development.”
The trio recruited Keli Wolfe and Barry Fuhrman (actual employees at Zeus) to play exaggerated versions of themselves. The group tried a couple Directors of Photography and Editors before choosing Luke Hawkins and Chris Williams, respectively, to give the show its look and feel. |
