The Weiners are back and better than ever, although in absolute truth, that is still way below the national average! Checking out some Flashpoint and Rocketeer, talking a bit about The Rapture and Macho Man, secretly wishing someone would buy them a bunch of action figures and comics!

Weiner Roast: Flashpoint #1, Punisher Max #13 and Magus #4

Flashpoint #1 from DC Comics

You have heard every comic nerd give their two cents of all the hype, 800 ties ins and creator choices for Flashpoint, so lets cram one more in your head, about as generic as it can be: it is good, but not great. There is a lot of potential in the world, and overall, I found the kickoff to the series to be intriguing, but lost of me since I don’t care about Flash or Batman as much most DC fanboys. Wonder Woman and her Furies are enticing me quite a bit, and the possibilites of Lois Lane and her resistance force are gonna make me purchase one of the tie ins.

Bottom Line: Like most of the events of the past 5 years, the main title is not where you are going to find the best story. It will be tucked away in the tie-ins, possibly with this series the juicy tales will be in the one-shots. Very cool world setup, lets see what everyone does with it.

Punisher MAX #13 from Marvel

Punisher continues trying to cope with the screwjob that Bullseye did with his head. Frank is not sure if he chose to let his family die that day in the park so he could be brought into another war. Tremendous character piece being done by Jason Aaron, and Steve Dillon knocking it out of the park with the wide arrange of emotions smeared across on the faces of characters with what looks like the greatest of ease. Riveting storyline, and almost purely a character driven piece you know will end with a great amount of bloodshed.

Bottom Line: If you dropped Punisher after Garth Ennis left . . . stop being stupid and go pick this book back up. This could also be a run for people who didn’t think they much cared for Punisher (like Frankencastle), just in the way Frank is being handled. Great for long time fans and newbies.

Magus #4 from 12 Gauge Comics

The penultimate issue of the miniseries giving us a good look at what could happen if magic returned to the real world. Anarchy and deceit start creeping in from almost anyone and everyone across the globe, while a select few fight to keep the peace. Political intrigue, mystery, tons of action and tense showdowns make this series a must pick up when it is collected, especially for the wonderful art from Rebekah Isaacs.

Bottom Line: Put yourself down for Skullkickers Vol 2 and Magus Vol 1 next time you are at the comic shop

No episode this week!

Sorry folks, a few technical hiccups with the laptop we use has caused us to not have an episode this week, and a delay in the 3rd Batman/Xman episode with Robb. We should be back next week with both series. Expect at the very least a few writeups here on the blog, because there was some awesome comics this past week!

Conan Movie Trailer

Oooooh, was that the Wilhelm scream I heard?
I have seen several articles that point out the terrible miscasting of Conan, but I think the guy looks liek the part and seems to bring some intensity. Personally, I have some high hopes for this film, but more from my entertainment and less from a “this is gonna be a great movie” stance. It’s Conan . . . hack someone’s head off, stab a beast, yell “Crom” a few times and be done with it!

TWITTER REVIEWS!

John requested I actually use my Twitter a bit more often, and when I started undoing my pants he reminded me that is is a social networking service and not my favorite little guy!

You can find and follow me at twitter.com/axonovian on Twitter, where from time to time, I will be witty, while other times I might talk about stuff I like. Pretty much, to sum it all up, my tweets will contain humor and non humor.

Below are a few of my Twitter thoughts on comics:

Free Comic Book Day Comics

DarkCrystal/MouseGuard-as Bo said, an awesome revisitation of pre-movie backstory with great mythosfeel/great nu-fable for furrypests

StarWarsClnWars/AvatarTLAirbender-aimed at a younger audience, this still hits upon some nice themes – outwitting strategy and lightsabers

Locke&Key-The main title is not for kids; not sure why this was a FCBD book but it still kicks ass as a horror/mystery. I’ll be getting it

GreenLantern-Nice lil’ collection of origin tales just in time for the movie-inspiring art and clever story.  Plus a Flashpoint preview!
youngJusticeBatmanB&TB-Hey kids!Help understand your tempestuous emotions through the outlet of TeenTitans!Plus Batmans friends are assholes

Extra Credits: True Female Characters

As always, these guys have put together one hell of package on promoting “smart thinking ;) But seriously, this falls in line with many of my viewpoints on both what makes good characters and the lack of representation of females in these roles, where honestly, I think with just a few shifts, we would get some our best gaming experiences and characters out of a female lead. This is also true with comics, movies, books and all other sorts of entertainment . . . also, feminist chicks dig me!

Wolfmen & Fall Of The Wolfmen – Accent UK

You may have heard us talk about this tremendous series from Accent UK on our show, but also just wanted to feature some of the art just to show you how spectacular it can be in this book. Andy Bloor does such terrific work on these two books, and really showcases the “grab you by the balls” type crime story it is, and then the “twist those balls right off” revenge tale of thee sequel.

Fans of “Criminal” from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips should take particular note of this series and give it a go especially if you also liked “Incognito” with it’s super hero slant to it. I cannot wait for the third book in the series which I believe is called “Last Of The Wolfmen”

You can check out Accent UK here

And you can check out Andy’s personal blog here where you will find all sorts of sketches, preview art, and articles of projects he is working on or has in the past!

Seriously . . . look at this colored print of a variant cover for Fall of the Wolfmen .  . . GORGEOUS!

Weiner Roast: “Page By Paige” & “I Kill Giants”

Finding out where you fit in life can be really difficult. What is your dress style? What music do you like best and will you use this to represent you? Is honesty and openness always the best policy when it comes to friends you think are better and more interesting than you?

Paige Turner (ha, yep, clever), is at that age where the rest of her life is coming into focus, but much of it is still blurry. She spends a lot of time clumsily navigating in her new city, and trying to find a place in her new group of friends, while missing old relationships. In this book, writer Laura Lee Gulledge does a terrific job of making Paige a character you can relate to very quickly, and at the same time, envy what she has.

Paige is a hell of an artist, and has a real knack for expressing herself, and spends most of the book following a set of rules her grandmother laid forth a long time ago to not only to make you a better artist, but a better person in general. The story is warm, charming and full of sugary sweetness, inspiration, trust and caring of friends, a budding relationship and tons of feel good moments.

The artwork inside of the book is gorgeous, often wrapping all around the page, with illustrator Gulledge not afraid to take the readers on a visual stroll that is engaging and distracting at the same time, much like an amusement park. Personally, I spent several minutes on more than a handful of pages just pouring over the wonderful artwork.

Paige and her friends create several works of art around the city, ranging from paintings to easter eggs full of random things, with this book screaming that young folks (and really all people) can do great and wonderful things when they work together, and that the experience can be more rewarding when shared in a project.

Bottom Line: I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who has a creative streak, and honestly, this would be on my recommended reading list for young girls 10-16. If you have a young lady in your life who is interested in comics, art, music or some form of creative outlet, then do her a favor and grab this book. The artwork is vibrant, stunning and extremely fascinating. Not only for young readers and one I am sure will easily make it onto my personal “best of” list of 2011.

So I am a few years behind on reading . . .  and missing gems like this is tragic! One of those I promised I would pick up once it was collected, somehow, I just never got around to it until recently. And let me tell you, I regret this immensely!

Wonderfully drawn by J. M. Ken Niimura and a terrific story supplied by Joe Casey, I KILL GIANTS is the tale of a precocious and rambunctious gal named Barbara, who spends a great deal of time losing herself in her fantasy world, pushing people away, trying hard to avoid the problems at home.

Bottom Line: Another one to pick up if you passed it over. Wonderful story coupled with great art (and a low cover price) make this a great gift to yourself or another. Fans of fantasy will be thrilled with this book.
