The Wormwold Saga – Free Online Comic

There was nothing more glorious than Summer vacation when I was a kid. Weeks and weeks with no school, no real responsibilities, getting into trouble with friends and by myself. You were probably the same, and also have those fond memories of those times. The beginning of Wormworld Saga captures this beautifully, with some slight twists.

Did you have a hidden crawlspace at your grandmother’s place? Survived a terrible fire that gives you panic attacks every time you see an open flame? Or get transported off to magical world full of evil denizens?

The entire first chapter is available to read right now, and it is gorgeous artwork and a charming, intriguing story. Click any of the pics in this post to be taken to the website.

And then this is what it seems we can look forward to . . .

Burnt Weiners Episode 059 Wolverine And Jubilee #1

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/burntweiners/Burnt_Weiners_Episode_059_Wolverine_And_Jubilee.mp3[/podcast]

Kathy Immonen and Phil Noto bring back the mall-going Jubilee in her new Vampire infested persona, who is receiving help and guidance from the most sage-like mutant in the history of the Marvel Universe! No, not Deadpool, you fool, it is Wolverine! Did the Weiners enjoy this particular venture into X?

Bo quantum leap slide(er)s into Doorways #3 (IDW) from George R.R. Martin before talking about Batman #706 (DC). Steege finally catches up with the rest of the the nerd kingdom with Final Fantasy XIII.

John shows how much he loves boys (what?) with his gushing on(double what?) on The Boys #50 (Dynamite), then checks out a new vision of the underworld with Nancy In Hell (Image). Weed once again loves what Brightest Day (DC) is bringing to the table, and bids goodbye to Season 8 with Buffy #40 (Dark Horse).

Burnt Weiners Episode 058 Infinite Vacation #1

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/burntweiners/Burnt_Weiners_Episode_058_Infinite_Vacation_1.mp3[/podcast]

What would you do if you could trade places with an infinite amount of your own selves and their different lives, it may just cost you a few bucks on your Paypal account?

Weed jumps into some dungeons and wishes he was fighting dragons instead of reading Dark Sun (IDW), gets some goosebumps for Hack Slash: Me Without You (Image) before getting amped to tell us a bit about Western Anthology (Accent UK).

John jumps on board Heroes For Hire (Marvel) in a big way with #2, just cannot get enough of Justice League Generation Lost #17 (DC) and then spends far too long talking about a documentary called “Blood Into Wine” that has Maynard from Tool making wine.

Bo may finally come around on the new series THUNDER Agents (DC) with the latest issue, but has his socks knocked right off with Days Missing: Kestus #1 (Archaia).

All this and the Weiners may or may not try to sacrifice a goat made out of tofu in a crazy ritual . . .

Burnt Weiners – Jon Price Interview – Magus – H2Awesome

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/burntweiners/Burnt_Weiners_-_Jon_Price_Interview_-_Magus_-_H2Awesome.mp3[/podcast]

We had the opportunity and the absolute pleasure to speak to Jon Price about his current comic MAGUS from 12 Gauge comics, which is a wonderful tale in which magic returns to our world in our modern age. Written by Jon Price and artwork from Rebekah Isaacs, this is one the Weiners recommend you pull off the shelf or get a digital copy of!

Jon also has time to tell us a booze story, a little bit about his band H2Awesome and how John from our show pronounces “Magus” like a fool!

More information on Magus can be found at 12gaugecomics.com

Weiner Roast: More Favorites from 2010 Part 3

Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson bring a wonderful group of creatures together to solve the problems of a supernatural nature in the the area of Burden Hill. Being sworn in by the Dog Society, a group of dogs, and a few cats, swear to protect their homes and their people from witches, golems and other evil magicks that seem to spring up in their area. Wonderful characters and gorgeous, watercolor painted artwork bless the pages inside of this hardcover.

A slight bit of warning about the series, this may be something you want to purchase for your kids, but there is blood, death and something on occasion you might not ant them to see. I personally find it appropriate for many children I have met, but I am also not their parent, so please use judgment in deciding. As for you, there is no excuse for you not to pick up this terrific collection!

If you think Conan is the only thing Robert E Howard did that is worthwhile for you to read, then you would simply be wrong (in my opinion). A brutal, violent tale of revenge from a great warrior, Cormac, and was one of my favorite books of the year, and really caught me off guard. I was not expecting to like this as much as I did, but Hawks of Outremer is a homerun.

Nazis in fiction are always evil, no exceptions. They are the type of men who would exploit a little girl without batting an eye. Especially a little girl who can control others with a single drop of her blood. So what happens when that little girl starts exploting the Nazis?

Wrapping action, adventure, a murder tale, and a huge, centuries spanning story arc, I AM LEGION is a great tale from the folks at Humonaoids. John Cassady provides the artwork, and if you are a fan of his and missed this somehow, make sure you check it out, as it is just beautiful in this book.

The buz around this book was huge, and it lived up to that hype and then some. Combining the western genre with horror, supernatural threats seems to come so natural for the creative team of Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt (the guys love doubling the last letter of their last name).  Intricate and lush artwork make this epic story a must read every month!

Weiner Roast: More Favorites from 2010 Part 2

Recall your younger days, when you bought into the rumors about Marilyn Manson removed a rib to blow himself, (or for you older crew, Led Zepplin put the devil speakings on their recording backwards, or for the younger crowd, Fallout Boy had a wine cooler). Now, there were times you sacrificed very personal things for your music, like skipping work to make a concert or blowing off a date with a gal to see an appreance of a band at the record shop? This book is aimed at you!

Mixing the occult myths and rock gods we have come to love and worship, with the dark sides and reality of the music business, we follow a tale of a guitar forged in the deepest valleys of hell, and how it corrupts the person who has it strapped to them. Gorgeous art, and a promise of continuing the crazy story make this a must read!

Billy Tucci illustrates one of the most gorgeous war tales I have ever had the pleasure to read. Placing Sgt Rock and his band into a situation that really happened to celebrate the bravery and courage of two groups of soldiers. One group, pinned down and trapped  by the German army, their supplies dwindling fast, and the enemy coming in fast. The second group, the ones sent to rescue them, made up of Japanese-Americans who for many years never received the credit they richly deserved for their courage and sacrifices in coming to the aid of their fellow soldiers.

Not much needs to be said about this gem right here. Crafted with love from notes from his brother Joss, Zack Whedon tells the tale of the holy man of the Serenity vessel, starting from the present, and shifting back in time a few years at a time to paint a wonderful story of a man who had lost everything, struggled, and gave up so much of his life for things he thought were both wrong and right. And adding beautiful illustrations to this book is Chris Samnee, who adds so much emotional resonance and depth to the story with his syle of artwork. Recommended HIGHLY for fans of Serenity and Firefly.

Burnt Weiners Episode 057 Weird Worlds #1

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/burntweiners/Burnt_Weiners_Episode_057_Weird_Worlds_1.mp3[/podcast]

Four Weiners, three tales of weird worlds . . . and a Lobo in a Bastich Tree! Coming from Dc Comics this past week was the anthology comic Weirld Worlds, featuring three different tales featuring Lobo, Garbage Man, and Tanga. Do the guys like it the comic, or do they slash it up with the jawbone of an ass they keep hanging on the wall?

Steege checks out some comic about Just Beiber (I refuse to look it up to see if that is how you spell his name) from Bluewater comics, and then checks out a graphic novel A God Somewhere (Wildstorm). Bo stomps Lobo back into our hearts and then shoves it down our throat with his chain covered hand.

Weed rambles off a really long list of comics he has been reading, stopping to tell usabout some of his favorites with Brightest Day #17 (DC) and Thanos Imperative COLON Devestation (Marvel). Stuff of Legend (Th3rd World) makes John want to bust out his old army men to declare war on the Bogeyman!

Weiner Roast: More Favorites from 2010 Part 1

Daytripper (Vertigo Comics)

As awesome and incredibly long as our crossover with TALES FROM THE PARENTS BASEMENT was, we know we missed a lot of awesome comics that came out in 2010(or we read a bit late from previous years), so here are some more of our favorites! We were scolded by a couple people for not mentioning the awesome Daytripper series from Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, which follows the life and death of Bras each and every issue.

No, you read that right, each issue is a different point in Bras life, with each issue ending with his own death. Tremendously powerful storytelling and emotional resonance to the reader makes what could be a very sad story be very enjoyable. Please do not get me wrong, there are points in which you will be incredibly sad, but that is not what this book is about. It is the celebration of life and all the things in it that can make it worth living such as family and passion, right down to the simplest of pleasures. I highly recommend checking it out for yourself.

The Coffin – IDW

This book is actually a collection of comics that came out from ONI in 2000, but they are collected here in an oversized hardcover that is just gorgeous. If you have never read The Coffin from Phil Hester and Mike Huddleston, picking this up is going to be a real treat. This was easily one of the books full of the most gorgeous artwork I picked up in all of 2010 (possibly only second to Blacksad).

If you have any interest in poignant, soul searching stories, or hell, you just love robots, this is a great book to pick up.

The Boys – Dynamite Entertainment

A series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson that if you haven’t check out, but spent long enough in a comic shop, will have heard about how over the top this book can be at times. That is true, but at the same time, you are going to get some of the most grounded and level headed takes on super heroes I have ever read in a book. The real question is if you are looking for a book with both of these qualities?

Following a group called “The Boys” led by The Butcher, most of the story revolves around this motley band who are trying to keep the superheroes in line, as in this world, they are far worse than any rockstar with their lack of responsibility and extreme pleasures. Drugs, hookers, orgies, and reckless disregard for the safety of others are typical things for the bad boys in spandex, and The Boys want them to answer for all they have done.

Just a great series that I can’t recommend to everyone, but if you liked Preacher or the Punisher story “Welcome Back, Frank” then I think there is a very safe bet in you enjoying this comic more than a little.

Burnt Weiners Episode 056 Batman Dark Night #1

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/burntweiners/Burnt_Weiners_Episode_056_Batman_Dark_Night_1.mp3[/podcast]

Batman? The Weiners have been wondering who the hell this Batman guy was they have been hearing so much about (forgetting they read one of the titles about a month back), so they decide to check out the new series by David Finch! Does this Dark Knight hold up (to the Bounty Quicker Picker Upper challenge)?

Bo crafts some Bitching Bo Fiction with his take on Dark Wolverine #4 (Marvel) before talking about Carnage #2 (Marvel), as Steege is falling deeper into the world that is Fallout: New Vegas with the new DLC.

John thinks the current Bullseye bowls a perfect football goal (and is terrible at sports analogies), while Weed gushes a bit more about the Angel Illyria (IDW) series.
