Burnt Weiners Episode 034 Shadowland #1

The Weiners celebrate some birthdays the Paul Dundee way . . . by reading the kickoff issue to SHADOWLAND! The Hand, Daredevil and Bullseye help blow out the birthday candles, and can’t recall the Banner’s name on the Incredible Hulk TV Show (and it was David, because “Bruce” was “too gay”).

Travis talks about some more metal concerts he attended, John gets pumped for Maleev and Bendis’ return as a working team on Scarlet (Icon Comics).

Weed tells us all about I Zombie (Vertigo), Brightest Day (DC), Secret Six (DC), Dark Rain (Vertigo), Pet Avengers (Marvel), Persepolis (Pantheon), and Dust Wars (Image)! WHEW!

Steege shares with us some wrestling stories, The Faith Series Jesus Christ (Bluewater) and how God has a broken heart and the devil looks awesome, and Electric Ant (Marvel). Bo then gushes about Green Lantern, Lobo, Atrocitus, dogs and kitty cats! Lobo – F YEAH!

The some more blah blah blah about random video game things and gross friends!

Marvel Super Heroes: What The–?! Shadowland Promo

Ha! Even though I enjoyed the hell out of issue #1 of Shadowland, I feel like this should be adopted into official canon of the story!

Tales of the Geek Lantern Corps – Review of “45″

Our buddy over at Tales of the Geek Lantern Corps has given his two cents about a recent graphic novel called “45″ from Com.x, and just the list of the people working on this comic is impressive as hell! Andy Ewington! Sean Phillips! Charlie Adlard! That not it, there is more (go look at the full list, it is IMPRESSIVE!). Anyways, check out Brian’s review at his site TALES OF THE GEEK LANTERN CORPS!

The meat and potatoes of the comic book world is super heroes stories and while I certainly love that genre, more so than I should sometimes, it just isn’t for everyone. Some people will scoff the idea of taking any story involving super heroes seriously. My recommendation: take those people (and yourself if you haven’t already) and make them read 45, a graphic novel that captures the human side of super heroes better than almost anything out there. Burnt Weiners Episode 033 Unknown Soldier #21

The Weiners take a look at a series that will unfortunately be ending in a few months, the critically acclaimed Unknown Soldier from Vertigo comics. This issue in particular blows them away . . . no pun intended as it focuses on the firearm AK-47.

Steege gets excited for the new Bloodbowl expansion for PC, and tells us about another excellent podcast focusing on the Bloodbowl board game and videogame, Three Die Block! Check out their podcasts here:

Steege raves a bit more about the movie Red Cliff, before John shoves him out of the way to talk about Beasts of Burden (Dark Horse). Weed checks out Joker’s Asylum II: Clayface, Angel(IDW) and Red Sonja(Dynamite), which brings up a little discussion about Robert E Howard. Bo again tries to get us a deal with Avatar Press as he raves about Chronicles of Wormwood and Captain Swing.

The Dead – Official Trailer

As fans of the zombie genre (but really, who isn’t these days?), there is so much out there right now, much of which seems very generic. This is one that really sticks out to me not only because it seems to launching into a very new territory of zombie movies, but at the same time seems like it could be very familiar. Looking forward to this one!

Kill Shakespeare #3

Releasing this coming week will be the third issue of Kill Shakespeare, a comic published by IDW from Conor McCreery, Anthony Del Col, Andy Belanger and Ian Herring. What really caught my eye initially about the series is the gorgeous layouts and art supplied by Andy and Ian.

The basic story boils down to good banding together to take on evil, but all the characters are from Shakespeare’s works. Some are twisted versions of the Bard’s classic characters, which really makes the book interesting. They are not so different that you would only recognize them in name, but the slightly different take on them has a very unique charm. This all being said, I am nowhere near an expert or even all that well versed in all of Shakespeare’s tales, but it is intriguing to me none the less.

I have had the pleasure of checking out the first two issues (as well as the third), and while there are a couple drawbacks including a bit of a slow start and bouncing between some scenes and times much too quickly, all around I am enjoying the book quite a bit and plan on picking it up once it becomes collected.

And as a very special treat, here are the first three pages of Kill Shakespeare #3, a pretty wicked scene from page 22, and some character sketches:
