Steve Perry, ThunderCats Writer Murdered

Stephen Perry ThunderCats Writer Murdered

Okay, normally I wouldn’t have posted this, as I just missed the ThunderCats boat growing up; plus, being a girl, probably wouldn’t have been interested… BUT this report is just full of fantastical things straight out of a pulp detective novel.

Rundown of the bizarrities whirling around Steve Perry’s life (and death):

  • They found his van with his severed arm inside!
  • His roommates happened to also go missing when he did, but were found and arrested on “unrelated charges” (uh-huh, sure)
  • He’s 56-years-old, but has a 5-year-old son with a 26-year-old.
  • He also just happened to have cancer.
  • He wrote a 1986 comic which contains “similarities” to James Cameron’s recent film, Avatar.

Wow. I dare you to NOT think of any conspiracy theories surrounding his death.

Bo and Steege One Eye it Up!

Who doesn’t love Cyclops? Oh, everyone hates him? Well, here are the Weiners doing their best to discredit him even more! What is next, we all dress up as Aquama or Apache Chief?

Burnt Weiners Episode 027 Avengers #1

*If you would be so kind, please ignore the lackluster sound quality. There was a problem with a microphone and the problem has been fixed for future episodes. Thank you*

The guys check out the new Avengers #1, which is relaunching from Marvel Comics, ushering in their Heroic Age . . . and The Weiners are quite underwhelmed with the new direction. Lots of talk about breakfast cereals kicks the show off.

Travis talks about a movie based on a Stephen King short story. Kang tries to come back in time and ruin the last episode of Lost for Steege, but Steege turns to Deadly Premonition (X-Box 360) for comfort. Steege has a chance to check out Fraggle Rock #1 and falls in love with the art. Weed approves of Zatanna, Brightest Day, Joe The Barbarian, and Battlefields. John quickly touches on Scalped and Captain Blood. Bo then tells us a Spider-Man story he is writing and presenting to Marvel, and a few other things he is checking out.

Book Review: ‘The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks’ by Max Brooks & Ibraim Roberson

Recorded Attacks is a graphic novel offshoot from The Zombie Survival Guide, and it’s REALLY REALLY COOL! The stories pull you in; whether they are based even somewhat in reality or completely conjured up in Brooks’ overactive imagination, they seem easily believable… like rumors from the next town over that can never be verified.

The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks (Max Brooks, Ibraim Roberson)

The illustration artist is Ibraim Roberson, who’s style is absolutely fantastic! There is a very fine line to walk when illustrating zombie fiction, between too humorously cartoon-like and over-the-top gore-for-the-sake-of-gore (and shock value). Roberson’s style is perfectly balanced in this book; lifelike enough to be believable, while the grotesque horrors are precision-tuned to turn your stomach without completely overpowering the underlying ideas. Top notch stuff!

I would recommend this book for even the pickiest of zombie genre snobs! It’s also great for the weekend zombie enthusiast, your teenage sibling, conspiracy theorists, your undead grandma, or anyone who appreciates the relevance of zombies in the arts. Final grade: A (for Awesome)

Huh?! Survival of the Dead?!

Why did no one tell me that George A. Romero was making another movie?! By the looks of the trailer, it will be filled with fantastical zombie killing scenes, as I have come to expect from Romero’s zombie flicks. Have I not mentioned how awesome the zombie death scenes were in Diary of the Dead?! Made the whole movie, if you ask me. You can watch the official trailer for Survival of the Dead and see for yourself just a taste of what I’m talking about:

Some people say that the “of the Dead” series has become drawn out and cliche, but I say: “NEVERRRRR!” (and shake my fist in the air). Romero’s continuing saga never fails to entertain me. I mean, COME ON! The guy’s been doing this for OVER 40 YEARS! It’s no wonder he has devised some of the most original and creatively theatrical ways to kill zombies that I’ve ever come across in the various forms of zombie media.

This, along with the fact that I personally enjoy Romero’s directorial style, has me all excited for Survival of the Dead, and I will most certainly be purchasing the DVD (to add to the collection). I would also go to see it in the theaters, but I expect it will be limited release, which means it probably won’t be in any theaters around here… we’ll see what happens this Friday (May 28). Otherwise I may have to wait until August 24 for the DVD release!

If you’re interested, you could actually watch Survival of the Dead right now on Amazon’s V.O.D. service… but it’ll cost ya… $9.99 to be exact. I’m not sure if it will still be available once the film is released, or up until the DVD release, so get while the getting’s good!

Burnt Weiners Episode 026 Birds of Prey #1

The Birds Are Back In Town!!! Diving right back into a series a few of the guys have missed, the Weiners check out Birds of Prey #1 and talk about their love of the characters and Gail Simone!

Travis checks out more Orc Stain, Brave and the Bold, and Detective Comics and seems to be diving into comics headfirst. John talks about 9, Punisher Max, forgets to bring up seeing Iron Man 2 (it was good), and really is enjoying Justice League Generation Lost. Weed checks out some more Dr Who, Game of Thrones, Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers, and tells us of some of his adventures in Boston. Bo is checking out more Star Trek, makes John get slapped, insists on talking about some “viewer” mail and talks about the boob front that came rolling in from X-Men Xenogenesis!

‘Iron Man 2′ segment on NPR

Neal Conan weinered-it-up on NPR’s Talk of the Nation today in a short, but somewhat in-depth, discussion with NPR’s resident comic book blogger, Glen Weldon on the topic of the recently released Iron Man 2 movie. I had no idea that one of my favorite talk radio hosts is a self-proclaimed comic book geek!

Listen to the 16 minute “podcast” on NPR’s website:
‘Iron Man 2′ Full Of Easter Eggs For Fans

When Neal quips, “I don’t read a lot of capes,” I literally laughed out loud. Another fantastic highlight is toward the end when one of the callers mentions that he now knows what was in the much sought-after briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Ha!

Vincent Vega and The Briefcase (Pulp Fiction)

9 Short Film

I just watched the “9″ full length feature and it was damn good! This is the short the movie was based on, and will give you a good taste of what to expect. Check it out!
